Can I feel ovulation?

Can one feel ovulation?

  • One may experience lower abdominal discomfort
  • Changes in cervical mucus
  • Slight rise in body temperature

Lower abdominal discomfort is known as "mittelschmerz." - lasts from a few minutes to a few hours. 20% of women feel this sensation of discomfort or pain. This sensation is felt felt as the egg leaves the ovary.

A few days before ovulation, cervical mucous becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy like raw egg whites.

Right after ovulation, one's body temperature can increase by 0.4 to 1.0 degreees F.

Ovulation Problems Detectable by Ultrasound

Problems found on ultrasound regarding ovulation:

  • Ovarian Follicles that do not grow
  • Ovarian Follicles that do not grow big enough
  • Ovarian Follicles that do not rupture at the right time

Ultrasound assessment (usually transvaginal ultrasound) is usually done starting on the 11th day of the cycle (first day of the menstural period is day one) and can be a daily event to track the follicle. The patient is usually asked to empty her bladder before the scan.

How does ultrasound monitor ovulation?

Ultrasound has a role in monitoring ovulation

Basic information:
  • The egg develops in a follicle of the ovary
  • The follicle contains fluid with the egg attached to the wall of the follicle
  • Usually one follicle develops each month
  • Usually a vaginal probe ultrasound is used to monitor follicular growth
  • On ultrasound, the follicle appears as a circular fluid-filled bubble.
  • It can be seen when it measures about 7 mm in size. It grows about 1-2 mm per day.
  • The follicle is ready for ovulation when it measures about 1.8 to 2.5 cm in diameter.
  • Following ovulation, the follicle usually disappears from the ultrasound view completely - this is the best evidence that ovulation has occured.
  • Also, follicular fluid which was released when the follicle ruptures can be detected in the abdomen behind the uterus.
